Area Rug Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Rug for Every Room
The most common rug mistake is buying too small. A rug that floats in the middle of a room makes furniture look disconnected, while the right size pulls a space together. Use these rules of thumb for your own projects, or share them with your customers to cut down on returns.
Living room
Aim for a rug large enough that at least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs sit on it. Leave around 30–45 cm of bare floor between the rug and the walls so the room still feels open.
- Small living room or apartment: 140 × 200 cm or 160 × 230 cm.
- Standard living room with a three-seat sofa: 200 × 300 cm.
- Large or open-plan living area: 240 × 300 cm up to 300 × 400 cm, with all furniture legs on the rug.
Bedroom
A rug under the bed should extend at least 45–60 cm beyond each side, so feet land on something soft first thing in the morning.
- Twin or full bed: 140 × 200 cm, placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed.
- Queen bed: 200 × 300 cm.
- King bed: 240 × 300 cm, or two 80 × 160 cm runners on either side.
Dining room
Chairs should stay on the rug when pulled out. Add about 60–75 cm to every side of the table. A table for six usually needs 200 × 300 cm; a round table of 120 cm fits a Ø 200 cm round rug.
Round rugs
Round rugs soften rooms full of straight lines. Ø 60–100 cm works beside a bed, at a dressing table or in a walk-in closet; Ø 120–160 cm anchors a reading chair; Ø 180–200 cm suits a round dining table or an entryway.
A balanced size mix for retailers
When you list a design, offer a size ladder rather than a single size: one small (80 × 120 or 120 × 160 cm), one or two medium (160 × 230 and 200 × 300 cm) and one large (240 × 300 cm or bigger). Medium sizes usually make up most of the volume, so weight your order towards them and keep the largest sizes in smaller quantities. Because our MOQ applies per design with sizes mixed, you can build this ladder in a single order.
